Corruption costs the European countries an estimated €120 billion annually,
about the size of the EU annual budget. It has a distorting impact on the economy,
competition and internal market.
Mrs Monica Macovei, European Woman of the Year in 2008, currently represents
Romania in the European Parliament, after having previously served as the
country’s Minister of Justice. In this key role, she was the one who pushed for
the implementation of crucial justice reforms required for Romania to become a
member of the EU in 2007. Since then, she has never ceased to be a prominent
voice in the fight against corruption, most notably by initiating the EU Anti-
Corruption Resolution, voted with an overwhelming majority last September.
